I have learnt to use the camera and equipment which was needed to film the production. I have learnt a range of different camera angles and shots during this task such as the ‘establishing’ shot, ‘match on action’ shot and the 180 degree rule. I have also learnt to edit ‘match on action’ shots together by cropping two clips, shot from different angles, and putting them together to make it look like one seamless movement. I have also learnt to add sound effects and transitions to my video. I used Pinnacle Studio HD 15 to edit.
We included a wide range of shots in our video which was the main aim. I think the filming part went quite well because everyone had a go and our ‘match on action shot’ went well because it looked smooth. I think the editing also went well because we managed to make the different clips flow when put together. However, we had a lot of outtakes and very few clips to put in our final production. This could have been prevented if we would have followed a script more closely and planned our dialogue before we started filming.
The least productive aspect of working in a group was that people were making noise and laughing whilst filming. This meant that we had to edit the clips to get rid of the noise and replace it by using a quieter sound from other clips. We did this by locking the video clips and then copying and pasting the sound clips so they played at the same time as the videos. This could have been prevented if we had a proper script and it wasn’t so improvised because people in my group might have been more focused. Also we could have filmed somewhere quieter to avoid unwanted noises. It took a lot of time to complete our shots which meant that we had to film on different days and had to wear the same clothes for continuity. However, the most productive aspect of working in a group was that everyone had lots of different ideas so we could learn from each other and accomplish things we might not have thought of if we were filming on our own.
I learnt how to use different types of shots and how I can use them to improve my AS production of a thriller. I have learnt that it is okay to incorporate new ideas during filming but it is very important to plan out what you are going to do beforehand and I have learnt that you have to manage your time well.
Looking back on the whole process of making this short video I am pleased that my group worked together and everyone had an input into the task. I am pleased with the production itself because we managed to get a variety of different shots in it and they flowed smoothly. What pleased me most about my role in the production was that I got to film, edit and be in the film so I know what it is like to partake in all the different roles in the process.
